How to Know it’s time to replace your Air Conditioner

We all know it gets pretty hot ‘Down Under’ and to say keeping cool is important is an understatement. An air conditioner is the single most useful piece of equipment when temperatures reach soaring highs. But as with everything else it has a shelf life, things go wrong and you can no longer rely on your air-con. Or maybe your power bills are soaring higher than the climates.

There’s always benefits to buying a good quality system, the price sometimes doesnt always reflect the systems after care. It always helps to consider things like cost of parts and servicing, warranty and the warranty agents in your area when looking at upgrading your unit. Typically, a regularly serviced air conditioner will optimize the life expectancy.  Below is a general list of signs to look out for when operating your air conditioner.

⊗Unit is blowing hot or cold air different to the set temperature

Older air conditioning units frequently stop cooling or heating properly. They continue to produce regular air levels, but the air coming out isn’t isn’t as cold as it used to be. This could be low refrigerant levels if cold air comes through on a warm setting. However, if your unit is blowing warm air on a cool setting this usually indicates a damaged compressor which can be up to $2000 to replace. A replacement unit will not only reduce energy loss but also bring down the energy costs.

⊗Diminished Air Flow When in operation

If your airflow from the vents is minimal often mean the air-compressor is on its last legs. If you’re operating your air-con at full capacity and your home is still not comfortable temperature wise, the first step is to clean or replace your filters. But be prepared for a whole new system

⊗ Increased noise levels or strange smells

A functioning air conditioner system should be almost completely silent. Apart from the occasional sound as it cycles, any noises different from the norm should be noted. Minor noises could indicate that it’s in need of some TLC, perhaps the fan is malfunctioning or a bearings come loose. However, if the noise is persistent including rattling, buzzing, screeching, grinding or ticking this indicates a more serious problem. Same goes for unusual smells. As well as being a nuisance, it indicates a problem you need to address right away. It could indicate mould within the system, which is a serious health concern. If left untreated the air being circulated within your home can cause allergies or more serious illnesses in people.

⊗ Leaks or excess moisture

Condensation is a by-product of the process of taking hot air and making it cold, a small amount dripping outside of your outdoor unit is normal. But the air conditioner should stay dry when not in use. Any moisture inside the house or a sudden increase in condensation or a leak means it may be time to visit Hearth House Bunbury for a new system!

⊗Your energy bills have dramatically increased

One of the main reasons people fit an air conditioner is to reduce energy bills. A spike in your energy consumption is more than just a nuisance. It’s a tell-tale sign of a major problem with your unit. If the air-conditioning unit is overworking, the diminished cooling capacity will raise energy costs as your unit struggles to maintain the desired temperature. A simple air vents cleaning or filter replacement might fix it temporarily.

There are other signs that your air-conditioning unit needs replacing, these cover the common ones. Generally, you don’t want to be spending large sums of money on an old unit to repair. Perhaps it’s time for a new model. With companies like Breezair, Braemar, Fujitsu and Mitsubishi offering specials like Cash backs, now is the perfect time to do so!
